A New Hybrid Standard: 2022 Tundra i-FORCE MAX

October 26th, 2022 by

Developed from the ground up for the next-generation Toyota Tundra pickup truck, i-FORCE MAX is a high-capability hybrid powertrain that can handle tough jobs without compromising efficiency. It’s a powertrain that puts combustion engine and electric motor perfectly in sync, not just boosting power but also enabling you to have a more direct feel for what your truck is doing.

How does it work? The Tundra’s i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine with a single electric motor and a heavy-duty 10-speed automatic transmission. To maximize performance, Toyota found a way to integrate the motor directly between the engine and the transmission.

This enhances power and responsiveness — and also makes it possible for you to drive the Tundra on purely electric power at low speeds. Total power output is 437 horsepower and 583 lb-ft of torque. That gives the Tundra up to 12,000 pounds of towing capacity and 1,940 pounds of hauling capacity in the bed.

Even better, Toyota developed a new power control unit that fills in the gaps in the torque curve, making it high and flat as possible. In other words, the Tundra’s powertrain is incredibly snappy, and puts power down quickly, including at low speeds and with heavy loads.
